Mental Wealth – nope it’s not a typo 😊
Throughout my life right from a very small child through to the present day, the Mental Health of others and myself, has been something I have been hugely aware of. It’s a subject that has always intrigued me, fascinated me almost. I’ve been surrounded by questions of why me, why my Mum, why that employee, why that stranger.
I’ve experienced and been overwhelmed by the impact of poor mental health, the lack of attention, understanding, open minded and heartedness that not looking after the health of your mind can have on every aspect of your life, including relationships, career and business.
There is unfortunately still stigma associated with mental health for many people, it can still be seen and as a taboo subject, a weakness, made up, even though the World seems to be tolerant and curious. Many organisations, charities, groups and networks now exist and do an awesome job of relentlessly driving the messaging through.
Even so, during the corporate HR and HR consultancy chapters of my life, I must have had 1000’s of conversations where ‘Mental Health’ was core to the topic being discussed. I became a Mental Health First Aider to support employees and managers to the detriment of my own at times.
If you Google ‘mental health definition’ this is the first dictionary definition that you’ll see -
“a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being.”
Hmmmm condition? Not sure about this if I’m honest. Is Imposter Syndrome a condition? Is Grief a condition? Is having a sh!t start to the day because your car wouldn’t start, a condition? I have no idea but what I do know is that each of these have an impact on our Mental Health.
Perhaps if we look at Mental Health as Mental Wealth and consider how we often in life choose to invest in property, shares, businesses, ideas, concepts, people…..then surely we could choose to invest in ourselves without fear, triggers or judgment to vastly improve the wealth of our minds?.....
This is where the Mental Wealth Scales comes in – this is the scale I use personally and with clients. The scale is at one end Bankruptcy and at the opposite end is winning the Euro Millions rollover lottery.
It’s absolutely ok not to be ok. When you’re not ok emotionally, mentally pause……breathe…….and take a few minutes to think about where you are on the Mental Wealth Scale. Once you know this you have a place to start to invest time, space, environment even money in your mental wealth.
Much love
