43 things I’ve learnt in 43 years
So today 43 years ago I was born on my Mother’s birthday 3 weeks late and weighing a hefty 10lb 4oz – Ouch!!
My Mum always said I was ‘the best birthday present ever’, however I’ve given birth to a 7lb 9oz baby so I’m pretty sure that pushing practicality a toddler out of your body on your own birthday isn’t exactly the gift that keeps on giving 😊
My Mum was a fragile badass and died suddenly on 24th March 2016, just 2 days after our shared birthday, it’s usually Mother’s Day too around this time, so this week is a bit tricky to navigate for me.
But no matter how difficult this week is, I always remember some of the brilliant things my Mum taught me, which this year was the inspiration for this blog – 43 things I’ve learned in 43 years, starting with Number 1 which my Mum taught me from a very very young age…
1) Everyone smells when they shit (thanks Mum, I even use this with my clients 😊)
2) Everything starts with you
3) Build a bridge and get over it
4) Always read the instructions first, and check you have all the bits – this works in all areas of life, not just flat-pack furniture
5) Energy flows where focus goes
6) You’re always one decision away from a totally different life
7) You have no idea what someone else is thinking, so stop guessing
8) Choices, choices choices – you always have a choice
9) Clear communication is key
10) You’re sitting on a goldmine, you just need a shovel
11) Press pause, for a second, breathe and go again
12) Even superheroes need a day off
13) It’s ok to have a wobble – boobs wobble, bums wobble and people still love them
14) The best place to start is by going back to basics
15) Reading gives us someplace to go when we have to stay where we are
16) Accountability creates action, action creates awesomeness
17) Being a people pleaser is not a terrible quality to have
18) Understanding your value is just as important as understanding your values
19) A cup of ‘Claire tea’ is the answer to almost any situation
20) I’m just a human with human needs
21) Focus on the process, not the outcome
22) The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide that you are not going to stay where you are
23) Have the courage to be disliked, it’s beyond liberating
24) Attract and repel in equal measures – this is the winning formula in business
25) Sort your shit out regularly so that shit doesn’t pile up
26) If you need to sleep, then sleep, even if that’s after lunch on a Tuesday
27) Not everyone knows what you know
28) Be responsible for your words, once they are said they can’t be unsaid
29) I am fragile and a badass all at the same time
30) If it is to be it is up to me
31) This is me, take me or leave me
32) Worrying is like sitting in a rocking chair, it gives you something to do but it doesn’t get you anywhere
33) Don’t judge others, you’re not perfect
34) Being happy drives some people crazy – so do it more
35) If you stumble make it part of the dance
36) I love people, I love HR, I love beetroot, I love books, I love shoes, I love tea
37) It’s ok not to be ok
38) Sometimes all you need is the open road and some serious tunes playing seriously loud where you can car dance and sing badly at the top of your voice
39) Slow progress is better than no progress
40) Resilience is not about never giving up; it’s about using your resilience to choose to give up
41) You can’t start the next chapter in your life if you keep re-reading the last one
42) Always help someone, you might be the only one that does
43) If you’ve read all the way to number 43, thank you, you are awesome! 😊
Why not do this exercise for yourself – what are the things you’ve learnt up to your current age? 😊
All that’s left to say is Happy Birthday Mum, wherever you are, I hope you are enjoying yourself with a box of Maltesers and an episode of Agatha Christie or 10 😊
Much love
